Parole of Freedom (book)
                         

Newmann is from a Gnomish village named Graylok, located in the mountains west of Thay. When he was 15, the village was raided and he and several other children (14) were captured and sold into slavery at the Slavepits in Thay. His new owner was one of the city librarians, a human wizard named Kraesilius. While Kraesilius was very strict, but  not abusive (like some other wizards in Thay); as long as you followed his rules, you had no problems. Newmann worked in the Library with his master, catagorizing, sorting and shelving the books. During his brief breaks and after work was completed, Newmann was allowed to read anything, as long as it was NOT a spell book or a book on magic. Newmann was fascinated by all sorts of literature from bardic lore to exercise books and everything in between; even magic called to him but he was very careful not to get caught with a magic book. His favorite book was a songbook and he practiced singing the songs. When he found a small discarded lapharp, that was in disrepair, he repaired as best as he could (following the instructions in one of the books) and decorated it with a sun (day) and moon (night). He began to practice with the harp  and became better with his music. Over the years, Newmann came to learn that not only was Kraesilius the City Librarian, he was also a major council member. During his time in Thay, Newmann learned quiite a bit of esoteric knowledges, including language. While he is not a linguist (yet), he has learned how to recognize certain linguistic patterns and scripting; he delighted in learning all of this and becoming proficient in writing and recognizing scripts for his master. After 10 years of working with Kraesilius, his master approached him and handed him a small book with an embossed cover. On the first page of the book was an official Parole of Freedom (a visa for non-Thayans) signed by Kraesilius and the High Magistrate. After talking with Kraesilius and getting the reasoning behind the Parole, this was a reward for his dedication to his work and his ethic in carrying it to completion; he earned his freedom. Newmann packed a pack with the few clothes he had, the lapharp and his tools that he had collected over the years. Kraesilius gave him 25 gold (one gold for each of his birthdays) to help him on his way. With his newly acquired wealth, Newman bought himself some protection, a pair of nicely balanced daggers.

The harp is not magical, it's just pretty; Newmann spent 6 years working on it. using dyes, paints and bits of colored glass and a small carving knife.
