Despite being proven right, there is no triumph in this.  I look to the old librarian, expecting her to have drawn her last breath already, and if so I gently close her eyes (otherwise I wait and listen, then do the same).

This knife is going to be extraordinarily dangerous to carry around; I don't know if just seeing the blade will trigger buried memories in just anyone, but I have to assume it will.  Then, most people don't carry knives around with them at all either, so standing out is not ideal.  It seems to me that the obvious solution is for me to use the knife to cut out a hole in the back of my sketchbook so that the knife will fit.  (Let me know if that seems impractical and I'll think of something else.)
